Penascosa is located on a large river beach on the right bank of the Côa River, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, within the parishes of Castelo Melhor and Almendra. The visit begins at the Castelo Melhor Reception Center. Then, you travel in a 4x4 vehicle with a guide along a dirt road through fields planted with almond and olive trees, covering a distance of about 6 km.
Along the route between the village and the river, you can see, from the opposite bank, the Quinta de Ervamoira, famous for its wines and the vastness of its vineyards, which also has a Site Museum. Shortly after, you reach a river beach on the right bank of the Côa, in an open valley area where the river still flows in its natural course.
From the vehicle parking area to the last rock visited, it's about 300 meters on foot, through a wide and flat area that presents no difficulties, with the only challenge being the stone steps to reach the last two rocks.
Penascosa is a hill overlooking the river, on whose slope 36 engraved rocks are scattered, 30 of them with Paleolithic motifs. Five of these rocks are accessible for visitation.
The engraved rocks are organized into two large groups: one to the north, extending from the beach to the top of the hill, where the majority of the Paleolithic incised figures are found, along with some rare figures from the Neolithic and Iron Age.
The other group, where the visit takes place, is in the southern sector, with all the rocks near the beach. This group mainly features Paleolithic animal figures, in stippling and abrasion techniques, representing the various species present in the Côa art.
It is the most visited site in the Côa Valley Archaeological Park, due to its easy access, the immense beauty and tranquility of the location, as well as the rich Paleolithic engravings, which are excellent representations of the finest Côa art.
